Opera House Casino History

A wooden circus building was the first edifice to occupy the site at which the Opera House casino now stands, back in 1877. It proved a very successful venture, and was very rapidly replaced by a more permanent structure, designed by John Petch, a locally based architect. When the attractions of the circus programme began to wane in Edwardian times Frank Tugwell, another local draughtsman, was employed to redesign the building, and he was the originator of The New Hippodrome, the music hall which eventually replaced the circus.

After a number of alterations and changes of names through the years The Royal Opera House came into existence, on the brink of the First World War. It was listed as a Grade II building in 1972, and hosted many different performances, but, as the summer of 1995 drew to a close, the venue closed its doors for good. The current owners of the Opera House casino acquired the property in 2002, and set to bringing their dream to life right here.
